What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a condition in which the amount of glucose in the blood is too high. It happens when the body's method of .converting glucose into energy does not work properly and allows the level of glucose to rise. The process that converts glucose into energy relies on a hormone known as insulin. When the supply of insulin stops or it becomes insufficient blood glucose levels can raise and results in diabetes Diabetes is of two types: 1. Type I Diabetes - INSULIN DEPENDENT DIABETES 2. Type II Diabetes - NON INSULIN ETIOTOGY Although the precise etiology of diabetes known there are many contributing fa Heredity, age, sex, obesity, dietary factors infections, stress. DIETARY MANAGEMENT The most important message for people diabetes is to eat healthy food in exactly the same way that is recommended for the whole population that is balanced diet based on rich cereals, pulses, permitted fruits vegetables & low in fat, salt and sugar. Recommendations: Carbohydrates - 60 -65% of the day's calorie, requirement should be met from carbohydrates (more complex starches should be given rather than simple sugars as they breakdown more slowly to release glucose). Food high in soluble fibre per day is beneficial like wheat flour mixed with soya flour, oat meat barley bajra etc. PROTEINS -15 to 20o/o or less of the days?s energy requirements should be met from the fats. PUFA should be preferred than saturated fats. VTTAMINS & MINEMLS: The diet should be well planned and nutritionally adequate to provide all vitamins and minerals. The diet plan of an individual is based on ht, wt, age, sex, physical activity and nature of diabeties. Combining Proteins, Fats, carbohydrate during meals & snacks or eating mix vegetables, sprouted Dal/ Upma/ Pulav/ Chapati with vegetable/ Chicken/ Fish can lead to better control of blood glucose levels. FOR GOOD HEATTH IN DIABETES Enjoy your food Eat a variety of different foods. Eat the right amount to be a healthy wt. individual. Take small frequent spaced meals. Never Skip/ delay your meals. Fasting & Crash dieting can be dangerous for diabetes. Avoid sugary foods like cakes/ pasteries/ candies/ jelly pasteries, jams/ jagerryl, juices/ soft drinks. Avoid root vegetable like potato/arbi/ sweet potato/ arbil zimikand/ beetroot and sugary fruits like mango/ cheeku/ banana/ grapes. Don't eat too many foods that contain lot of fat (Desi ghee, Butter, Vanaspati, Cream, Red meat Egg yolk, Full Cream Milk, Khoya, Burfi, Fried Foods) .Baking, Roasting, Steaming, Grilling are the preferred methods of cooking over other methods. Drink plenty of water. Eat more of Green leaf vegetables and Salads. Eat a tea spoon. of methi dana powder early morning daily. Alma, Phalsa, Karela, Tulsi leaves are recommended. Skimmed milk is recommended. Avoid alcohol Regular exercises. During the sick days Diabetic should plenty of fluids (Fresh lime with salt, soup, butter milk and an added intake salt should be encouraged. Use your oils in rotation sunflower, groundnut mustard, corn, soybean olive oil. Avoid preservatives.
