The Joy Luck Club
(Amy Tan)

Publicidade
The Joy Luck Club follows the lives of four Chinese women and their daughters, from the early 1900's to the present day.

It takes you into Chinese culture, both in China and America, showing
how the different worlds clash, and how difficult it can be to be to
understand why your daughters have different values and ideals to those
you where brought up with yourself.

It is difficult, at times, to keep up with who is talking, but the stories are so breathtaking, it is worth reading.

One of the women is promised in marriage to another child at the age of
2. After her family's home is destroyed in a flood when she is
12, she is delivered to her future husband's home and is expected to
spend the rest of her days there. Even if her husband dies, she
will never be able to remarry.

Her daughter becomes at chess prodigy when she is only 9 years
old. Her mother encourages her talent and takes her to
tournaments, which she often wins. After her mother embarrasses
her in a shop, she refuses to play. Both mother and daughter are
so stubborn and are unable to admit that they are wrong, therefore she
never plays chess again.

A fascinating book that will keep you thinking for months after you have read it.
