A Wrinkle In Time
(Madeline L'Engle)

Publicidade
Meg is an outcast in school and resents
her older brother?s popularity. She also desperately misses her father, a
scientist missing on a mission. Everyone else does not believe this, for
gossip?s sake assuming that he has left her mother who is unable to admit it.
Her younger brother Charles is the only one that understands her, he is
himself strange and brilliant.

When the three mysterious ladies Mrs Who, Mrs What and Mrs When turn up
Meg doesn?t know what is going on, although Charles seems to. Another ray
of hope turns up unexpectedly in Meg?s life in the form of Calvin, a new
friend.

The three quirky ladies Mrs Who, Mrs What and Mrs When who dress like
tramps-and happen to be millions of years old offer them the one chance at
finding their father. Meg is dubious but Charles is as sure of himself as ever
and insists that this is the only way to get their father back. If that is the case
then Meg wants to go straight away and that is exactly what they do.

Meg, Charles and Calvin wrinkle through time and space with the old ladies
only to discover a murky darkness that hovers around their own world and is
the essence of evil. They want to know what it is and ultimately find out. The
three children are told that to rescue their father they must travel to a world
in the sway of this evil.

The children remain true to their purpose despite the terrifying darkness of
rescuing Meg and Calvin?s father. They travel to a world where there is no
sickness because all sick people are killed and children are brainwashed into
bouncing balls in time with others. The whole world is in the sway of IT an
unspeakably evil thinking machine.

There are no individuals in IT?s world, people all behave according to the
rules that they have been brainwashed with. In this world the paper lands
exactly on the doorstep every time he throws it and everyone is terrified of
breaking the rules and losing whatever individuality and freedom they have
left. IT does not require anyone else to think, IT does all the thinking for
them.

In order to rescue their father Charles must merge his mind with this
dangerous entity. Meg and Calvin manage to rescue Meg?s father but Charles
still remains in the claws of IT. After being ravaged by IT?s presence Meg
must once again return to the world to rescue her little brother by offering
him the one thing IT can never offer: love.

A Wrinkle in Time is a superbly written novel that explores the choices we all
have to make between what is easy and what is right, between conformity and
identity.
