The Dark Lord Of Derkholm
(Diana Wynne Jones)
Derk, a wizard specialising in magical creatures has been selected to be this years Dark Lord. This means he has to organise invasions of dark elves, attacks by things in the night battles between good and evil, summon a god, arrange for the dragons to hold clues to his weaknesses and die one hundred and twenty six times. Not to mention the fact that his wife and the High Chancellor of the Wizards university are actively undermining his efforts. If this were not enough he also almost gets boiled to death by an angry dragon, leaving his his children who are two humans and four griffins to do all the work. One of Derks best friends is also betraying him under the Chancellor?s orders and she herself is unaware that his betrayal goes deeper, to stealing magic from the world with the help of Mr Chesney in return for the insidious reward of money. All this is because Mr Chesney has an enslaved demon that forces them to cater to the tourists or ?pilgrims? from his world. Mr Chesney also has deals with governments to transport prisoners there to die as evil minions as well as having private contracts to kill individual tourists who he has already charged astronomical fees to be there. He is the true dark lord and if these other profiteering exploits are not enough he is also stealing magic from the world. Blade, Kit, Don, Shona, Lydda and Elda; Derk?s Children each try to find their place in the world as they take on their father?s adult responsibilities. In the process each finds new confidence and their own special abilities as well as being rewarded for their efforts. Exasperated with their fumbling magical ability the Dragon King that fried their father becomes the teacher of Blade and Kit. Lydda regains her place with the Bards and the other griffins discover their own beauty and talents. When Derk believes Kit and Blade are dead he has had enough. Contract or no contract: no more pilgrims are coming through. When Mr Chesney comes with the demon to sort out the fuss all seems to be lost despite the support of another powerful demon Derk accidentally released. It is only when Derk seeks the help of the gods that they are able to be free of their willing slavery. This powerful novel explores the exploitation of different cultures and self determination in a format easily understood by everyone. It also investigates how tourism can distort and twist the progress of societies, as well as gently parodying the fantasy genre.
