Mentoring has had big influence on many
Both the president of the United States and Kerrville?s Mayor Gene Smith have declared it. Numerous celebrities have united to support the cause, and literally millions of people can attest to the difference it?s made in their lives. Mentoring works. January has been declared National Mentoring Month and one of its aims is to recruit more mentors.
Most successful people say they had mentors along the way who guided and encouraged them. The Harvard Mentoring Project, which has spearheaded the month-long campaign, has conducted videotaped interviews and collected written essays from prominent people talking about their mentors. Among those celebrities who say they owe their success to mentoring include Gen. Colin Powell, Sen. John McCain, Oprah Winfrey, Tom Brokaw, Ray Charles and Cal Ripken.
These celebrities all have lent their support to back the national campaign that asks ?Who Mentored You?? We encourage you to take some time today, and throughout this month, to consider that question.
Who were those individuals in your life?
Whether you were a part of an organized mentoring program such as Big Brothers Big Sisters or any of the mentoring programs at local school districts, you probably can name at least one person in your life who encouraged you during your childhood years. Surely there was someone who showed you the ropes, offered advice and had a hand in making you the person you are today.
Maybe they didn?t take you under their wing deliberately, but still there is no denying the impact they made. During National Mentoring Month, we suggest that you consider making a deliberate attempt at employing this tried-and-true method.
Find a kid to mentor. This doesn?t have to be an awkward or forced process. Mentoring is not about choosing a protégé; it?s about being available to and spending time with a child.
You know the difference it?s made on your own life. Show your gratitude by doing as much for a kid in your area.
