?the Troyen War Will Not Take Place"
(Jean Giradoux)
THE TROYEN WAR WILL NOT TAKE PLACE is a play in two acts written by a French dramatist Jean Giradoux. The city of Troy is threatened by war: the Greek queen, Helen, was kidnapped by a Troyen prince, Paris, and the Greeks will attack Troy if she won't be returned . The Greeks decided to send an ambassador to claim Helen. The play takes place in Troy; they wait for the delegate of the Greeks, Ulysses and his suite. Meanwhile in Troy two clans oppose: the partisans of war represented by the leader of the senate, Demokos; and the pacifists, who want peace in any price. The leader of the pacifist is Hector, brother to Paris and a great warrior. Hector is the main character in the play, through him Giradoux expresses his opinion about war in general. Hector is tired from fighting; all he wants is to leave in peace with his family and to be near his future son. Demokos, on the other hand, wants war and encourages nationalism. Will the gates of war be reopened or locked forever? This is the main issue of the play ? is war the only solution to our problems? Though the characters of the play adapted from Greek mythology its subject is very authentic, the play reflects the frightening rise of dangers in Europe of 1935 and can be related to our days too. The theme of war ? can we avoid it? - is not the only theme of the play; it?s also about patriotism, the power of the word (propaganda and manipulation), the fragility of peace, love and celebration of life. Each reader can relate to this play and be inspired by it; no one will be indifferent to the predictable yet surprising end.
