The Godfather
(mario puzo)
the godfather is not just a book.it is way of thinking.it is perhaps also a way of living life;at one's own terms.it is an equal saga of greed;lust;human decadence, and yet a moving account of the resilience of one man who rises from the dust and muck of newyork ghettos to shed the stigma of being a penniless immigrant and to be the man whom all look up to.to be the godfather.the book is as much philosophy as it it is fiction.the idea of standing up for one's own couldnot have been expressed more aptly or more starkly as perhaps done by the author when he makes michael corleone say,"every bit of shit a man has to eat;its all personal." the idea is vulgar;the violence repulsive and yet when the straight boy of the family;the goody goody son mike takes up the gun to avenge the attempt at the life of his father;it does not fail to give the reader a sense of deja vu;and perhaps that is fitting.in this world of a growing recognition of metrosexuality and ubersexuality;we tend to forget that the primary duty of a man is to be a man.perhaps it is important.and the godfather demonstrates that. that to be a man you need something more than the metaphorical two balls between your legs.the ladies of the book in their muted way are as much man as any of the male characters.the wives of the don or of don michael are no less gutsy than those persons. and that balance and the flowing writing of the writer;which is stark and hard hitting and yet has nuances such that you might almost be reading poetry;they make the book eminently readable.a truly great book.
