Angela's Ashes
(Frank McCourt)

Publicidade
This book has been my "Christmas Book" for as long as its pages have graced my book shelves. It is the story of a boy, his family, and growing up Irish. During the holiday season, when things can seem gloomy, this book is a reminder that it can always get worst.

he first sentence of the book is gripping, in a subtle way. You want to know why he feels the way he does, and as the story continues, your eyes are opened, and your soul is shaken.

t takes you, from a first person view, through the childhood and adolescent years of the author. From the city streets of America, to the dirt roads of nineteen thirties Ireland. It takes you on a wild ride from the shimmering streets of New York, to the dreary, muddy slums of Limerick, and back again.

he narrative is bold, funny, smart, and at times, heart wrenching. McCourt describes his family brilliantly, allowing glimpses into the past, and what made them who they were. His heavy drinking father, his suffering mother, his innocent, mildly spoiled brothers. By the time you read the last, amazingly hopeful page, you feel as if you know these people intimately. The way McCourt utilizes words can be likened to a painter and his brush. The images are vivid, almost as if you were watching a movie.

he hardships are told in a way that you can almost see the author speaking to you, a wry smile gracing his lips. Everything from stays in the hospital, to the deaths of siblings still in their first years, to stealing in order to survive. It is a book that motivates, making you realize that no matter how bad things get, unless you are dead, you can make them better. As far as memoirs go, this is one of the best I have read.
