(Zee Tele scripts new HR initiative ? Subash Chandra has one-to-one meetings with staff)

WHAT were you doing at my age?" "What is your vision for the company?" Just a few googlies that Zee Telefilms Chairman, Mr Subhash Chandra, is fielding to his employees.
As part of its latest human resource (HR) initiative that the company has embarked on, the top honcho has decided to have one-to-one meetings with 800 of the company's 1,100-odd employees.
The exercise, which has been going on for the past fortnight, is to try and ensure that the employees share the same vision and mission as the top management, besides assessing talent and commitment.
According to Mr. Ashish Kaul, Vice President, Corporate Brand Development, Essel Group, "The external health of a corporation is nothing but a reflection of its internal health and to assess if all of us are on the same wavelength, personal interactions are important."
While there are no immediate changes in the job profiles of employees on the cards, this is being viewed as an enrichment activity, whereby some of the managers could be given additional responsibility.
Mr. Kaul, however, said that the human resources development initiative has nothing to do with the churning that has happened in the company. Besides some senior officials quitting in the recent past, the latest to exit the company is Ms Apurva Purohit, President, Zee Telefilms.
"Our staff turnover is not very high. In fact, it is higher in other groups," he added.
Referring to a study by Ernst and Young Centre for Business Innovation, Mr. Kaul said a company's ability to attract and retain employees is the fifth most important non-financial criteria (out of 39) for large investors to get attracted to a company. "The study revealed that a surprising 35 per cent of investment decisions was guided by non-financial considerations like a company's reputation for satisfied employees," he added.
The latest HR strategy is being implemented in Zee Telefilms and will be later extended to other Essel Group of companies. This comes in the wake of a brand consolidation exercise wherein all the 18 companies and 33 brands are to come under one umbrella brand of Essel Group.
Besides Zee Telefilms, the other businesses of the Group include entertainment companies namely Essel World, Water Kingdom and E-City's Fun Republic, packaging company, Essel Propack, gaming company, Playwin, technology group Agrani and education initiative Zee Education.
