Clan Of The Cave Bear
(Jean M. Auel)
The first word that comes to mind when I think of this book is strength. It is the story of Ayla, a woman who exists at the very beginning of humanity. Due to a tragedy in her youth she is left orphaned and alone in a harsh world in which few survive for long. There is no one left of her people to care for the frightened young girl. Others come along and adopt her but it isn't long before Ayla realizes there is a price to pay for her survival. She lives in a world in which she doesn't belong. The people around her are so different there is no way for her to ever fully conform. They are a dying breed. Ayla is one of those who will replace them. This naturally causes resentment among those who, at first, only wanted to help her. In spite of their resentment and her own confusion at being so different, she manages to cling to the edge of a society that barely tolerates her. Somehow she does this without ever losing her inner strength. She endures many mistreatments and even learns to love and to be loved in spite of her lowly status. However, the life that she manages to make for herself may not be enough. Is the love of her family and friends enough to keep her tied to the harsh, alien world into which she was adopted? Or will Ayla be unable to resist her desire to find a place and a people to whom she can belong? Ayla has to decide if she is already at home or is her home beyond a far distant horizon.
