Pickwick Papers
(charles dickens)

?Books should to one of these four ends conduce,
For wisdom ,piety delight or use.?
It can be concluded without doubt that ?The Pickwick Papers? by Charles Dickens conduces to all these four ends. This exquisitely written masterpiece by Dickens is undoubtedly the most hilarious work of fiction ever written. As one browses through the voluminous pages, one gets rapidly aquainted with all the main characters ?the benevolent Mr. Pickwick-the founder of the Pickwick Club, the rather stout Mr. Tupman ?the rubicund ladies man, the poet Mr. Snodgrass, the clumsy Mr. Winkle to whom all sorts of accidents always seem to happen. And how can one forget the loyal and quick witted Sam and his evergreen father, the hilarious exchanges between whom constitute one of the most enjoyable parts of the novel. Dickens introduces a panorama of characters to take forward the narrative and succeeds in bringing them alive before the reader. Thus the reader gets aquainted with the sly and loquacious Mr. Jingle who hoodwinks Mr. Tupman and elopes with his lady love, while also meeting characters as varied as a sleepy fat boy, a drunkard preacher, an old lady, a desperate spinster and many more. The humor lies in the varied sometimes uncomfortable, and nearly always funny situations that these characters find themselves falling into. One of the funniest of these is the one in which Mr. Pickwicks widowed domestic help mistakenly assumes that he is proposing to her and afterwards files a lawsuit for breach of promise!! While every situation abounds in humor and gaiety, the novel is also philosophical, satirical and inspiring in parts. This is especially true when Dickens describes the scene of an election and the cut throat rivalry between two competing newspapers. The powerful satire makes an impact even in the lively surroundings. Dickens potrays the lively side of life while not forgetting the dark and gloomy part. Yet those too are looked upon with an optimistic and philosophical outlook. This is where Dickens distinguishes himself- in producing a humorous novel that at once is both funny and sad, both lighthearted and philosophical, both comic and tragic and above all extremely enjoyable. This novel is guaranteed to bring a laugh to even the most gloomy pair of lips , and hope and optimism to the most hardened pessimist. Must read.
