Abstract of ?The Hungry Tide? by Amitav Ghosh

I know not, whether I am competent enough or I have the qualification to venture into writing an abstract of a literary masterpiece, The Hungry Tide. I can only assure of trying my best to do justice to it, to the best of my abilities. Actually speaking, I got the inspiration to write the abstract owing to the quality of the writing. It has evoked such irrepressible thoughts and emotion, that I had to bow to this surge of feeling. Whence this urge. Hope you all have the patience to go through this and get the urge to read this book; that is if you haven?t already done that!
The Hungry Tide, the name itself is bound to evoke some curiosity. Curiosity, not as to the contents but regarding the how?s and whys. The name has the meaning implicit that the book will deal with river. But then that is not enough to create a masterpiece. Actually what has made this book a literary gem, by Gosh, is a unique quality that he has brought to his writing. Unique because, his approach is scientific and writing style, equivalent to a narrative is sheer artistry with words. Furthermore, the portrayal of the background of the story has a panoramic yet a surreal quality. These are the pillars which have made this book a best seller, even though the topic is abstract in its own way and it is on these lines that I am going to frame my abstract!
To start with, the approach is so scientific. Why? Because though it is only a story, it hasn?t missed a single detail regarding the geophysical state and location of the topic of the story, The Sunderbans. Anybody who is not aware of where it is, what are the existing conditions, hardships there will get a compassionate know-how after going through the book. Not only it being highly informative on many counts. To name one of them is the existence of the fast receding population of the dolphins in the water of the The Sunderbans. I for one didn?t know that it was a residing place for the dolphins. The extent to which he has described their existence, manifests the labour put into the research work and it can be helpful for other aspirants having a bend for such field of work. Not only their existence, but he has thrown quite a deal of light on their behaviour. How it varies with the weather and the time. How their departure from normal behaviour can serve as an indicator of some impending nature?s rage, taking into its fold, the hunger of the tide, the embodiment of the book. Its rage devouring everything, except a lone survivor, a witness and victim of the rage.
Writing style, is of narration. Narration, almost giving it an autobiographical quality. And it is through his eyes that we almost live through the entire story, which is an artistically woven journey, having an earnestly humane aura. The characters in the book: Pia, Kanai, Fokir are the ones around whom the story has been delicately woven with Fokir in the end becoming the quencher of the hunger of the tide. He gives up his life in saving Pia. The description of his even lifeless body shielding Pia from the rage of the tide has one claustrophobically emotional. And the peculiar thing is that Pia being a nonresident Bengali is unable to speak the language which Fokir can understand i.e., Bangla. But they manage to communicate. How they do so has a pristine quality and really touches the heart. Furthermore, in his death, Fokir leaves behind a small kid, Tutul and his wife, Moyna. And it is this kid who in his moment of utmost grief, demise of his father, doesn?t forget that Pia during her stay with them hasn,t shown any fondness for food barring banana and so lays one of them on her lap. It is this incident, which is bound to make the reader speechless if not moved to tears. Such heart rending portrayal it is.
As to the geophysical description of the location, it is very much to the point of being a crisp canvas.Yet the literary flair that is apparent makes the presentation akin to slide shows. As if theperson reading the book is able to visualize the surroundings being discussed.
This book, in spite of not being a thriller, is unputdownable, to sum up in one word. Such is the suspense quality in the book that each and every page has one hooked for the subsequent pages. At the same time it has an almost ethereal humane essence, which though not apparent, is all pervading! The quality that is associated, rather I associate, with the writings of Erich Segal. Ghosh?s ,The Hungry Tide, if not equating with The Acts of Faith by Segal, comes really close to it in touching the invisible chord. The chord that is high strung even under normal conditions. The chord of ?Human Bonding?. It is very delicate and it has been meted the apt treatment that goes on to prove how well it is understood by both of them. Ghosh has given the communication between Pia and Fokir the the dimension of talking without talking. Thus though the tide in its rage has devoured everything, has failed to consume the essence of life: human-bonding.
