Iliad
(Homer)

Publicidade
There is a wrath between Achilles, king of the Myrmidons, and Agamemnon, king of Athens and supreme leader of the Achaeans.
It has to do with a woman, a beautiful slave, Achilles? prize for the taking of the city of Teuthrania, Troy?s neighbor. Agamemnon took her from him when he had to return his own spoil of war, his concubine, to her father. So Achilles is refusing to go into battle.
When the Achaean army goes to fight with the Trojans, it is defeated, but Achilles still refuses to fight.
His friend, whom Achilles loves amongst all the people in the world, takes his armor and pretending to be the mighty hero, goes into battle. The Achaeans think it is Achilles, and so do the Trojans, until Hector, the leader of the Trojans, slaughters him and takes Achilles?armor as a trophy.
This infuriates Achilles, who morns Patroclus, and swears revenge. Achilles? mother, Thetis, a Nymph, promises her son a new armor.
At Thetis? request, Vulcan, the God of Earthquakes, makes Achilles a new, more beautiful and ornate armor, with which Achilles once again engages in battle.
Hector wears Achilles?old armor. He wants to face him outside the walls of the city and propose a bargain. When he realizes that the hero will take no bargain, he is stricken by fear and starts running around the perimeter of the city. Three times he encircles the walls, but at the fourth round, Athena, the Goddess of War, tricks him into believing that he is not alone: she takes the shape and voice of Deiphobus, one of Hector?s brothers. She tells him that, while the rest of the Trojan army, seeing Achilles in such a rage, retreated into the walls, he exited the doors and came to help him. So Hector stops running and faces Achilles. When he realizes that it was a trick and all is lost, he decides to fight like a lion. But in the fight, Achilles prevails, and his sword traverses Hector?s chest from the base of his neck, killing him. Achilles then drags Hector?s body across the field in plain view of the Trojans, and back into his camp.
With Apollo, God of Medicine and Music?s protection, old Priam, king of Troy, goes to the Myrmidon?s camp to retrieve the body of his dead son. For twelve days there is truce between the two enemies, so they can honor and bury the dead. Hector, breeder of horses, is thus buried with honor.
