Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
"Pride and Prejudice" is one of the best known works of Jane Austen. In this story of an upper-middle class British family with five daughters, and their travails before each of them settles down in life, the author also explores the social norms and prejudices of nineteenth century Britain. The oldest, and most beautiful daughter, captures the heart of a wealthy young man. Her intelligent sister Elizabeth, however, is too independent to appeal to any potential suitor. She is disgusted with the antics of her family, most of all those of her eager mother and the youngest sisters. The most intriguing of all is the romance between Elizabeth and Darcy, who at first dislike each other but fall madly in love towards the end. In that it can also be called the precursor of modern Mills & Boon Romances. Throughout the book, one is fascinated by the humour and delicacy with which the author handles the characters. The passive Mr. Bennett acts as a counterfoil to the hysterical Mrs. Bennett. The various people they and their daughters interact with, the suitors who seek their charming daughters- all are sketched in beautiful detail. All of them are equally memorable.
This book is an all-time favourite, among students and lay readers alike. It has been reprinted many times, in both abridged and full versions, so you can pick whichever level suits you. With its easy pace and sensible style, it is a pleasure to read it again.
