Pride And Prejudice
(Jane Austen)

Publicidade
Many would cite 'class' as being the underlying theme of Pride & Prejudice. I would disagree. Love - against all odds - is surely the compelling and resounding moral of this story. What other motive could have driven Mr Darcy to go to such lengths to ensure that Elizabeth Bennett's sister was saved from a life of exclusion and ruin?

The seeds of love are sown very quickly and somewhat unexpectedly within Mr Darcy. To his changrin, Miss Bennett's opinion of Mr Darcy are not at all favourable and result in her rejecting his marriage proposal. From this point onwards the story develops and illustrates how we often mistake the characters of others based on our own prejudices.

As in life, often only when we are faced with a crisis do we gain an insight into the true character and feelings of others. 'Cometh the hour, cometh the man ...' surely these words were made for Mr Darcy. At the point when all hope had faded he found the solution that had alluded all others. Love was the engine, the guide, the force.

As we are all aware the beginnings of love are often inauspicious. It is undoubtedly a road full of twist and turns. The object of ones affection does not always reciprocate as one would hope. Miss Bennett's status and standing in society is undeniably beneath that of Mr Darcy. For him it is not a good match. Lucky then that we have that we have the capacity to realise our first impressions are not always correct.

Darcy & Bennett, the central protoganists, prove the strangeness of love. They constantly illustrate how it can creep into ones heart and mind when it is least expected and triumph against all odds.
