The Victorian Era
by :csacin
In
Victorian Era, Pessimism became a force and for many a poem and poet it was a
source. Melancholy is the stuff of poetic brain. When melancholy becomes the
music of the heart the symphony of pain vibrating through silence of tears finds
an outlet in the lines of elegiac poetry. That is why poetry is the sister of
sorrow and the solitary vehicle of the emotions of a pained soul. The pining
felt by the soul may be caused by a variety of factors. It may be personal. It

Thyrsis are the three great pastoral elegies in the English language. It may be
noted that an elegy may be personal or impersonal . The poet may mourn the
death of some personal friend or relative like gray in his elegy, he may
express his thoughts and sense of grief at the sad fate of mankind. This urges
the elegiac poet to reflect thoughtfully and philosophically on human life and
its problems. The poet begins with the death then passes on to deal with the
serious themes connected with the mystery of life and death. That is why Tennyson
has examined In Memoriam such question
as Is the soul immortal? Is there any plan or order in the universe? What is
the nature of this order? Is it a moral one? What is the nature of God and does
