Rural English society, described through two sisters who fall in love with a rich
bachelor and a man of dubious morals. The social customs of the last century
inhibited restless minds, persons like those characters of the Briton Jane Austen
(1775-1817), one of the first?and best?female writers. In Pride and
Prejudice, her principal novel (together with Mansfield Park),
two daughters of a marriage, without high social standing, fall in love with a rich
bachelor and a man of dubious morals. As it could not be another way, conflicts
arise, as much internal, in the minds of those persons enslaved by a puritan
environment and education, as external. The novel depicts the complex English
society, the tensions that turn a peaceable?in appearance?rural world into a
place where insults and resentment arise as soon as someone commits the
slightest faux pas. Austen proves herself a deep connoisseur of the mechanisms
that govern human relations, aside from being a writer of irony.
