The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy
(Douglas Adams)

Publicidade
Welcome to the wacky, wonderful, hilarious (and often bizarre) world of Douglas Adams. The Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy begins with Arthur Dent?s really, really tremendously bad, awful day. First, the government demolishes his little cottage. Then he finds out his best friend, Ford Prefect, is not an actor as suggested, but is actually an intergalactic travel writer stranded on the planet Earth. And to cap it all off, he is informed by his recently-revealed alien friend that Earth is to be demolished in?oh? about twelve minutes by the ruthless, bureaucratic Vogons to make way for none other than a hyperspace bypass.
Ford rescues Arthur at the last possible second as the only planet Arthur has ever known is incinerated. Unfortunately, they are ?saved? by the Vogon?s ship, wherein they are exposed to torture beyond human (or alien) endurance?they are read Vogon poetry, widely considered to be the worst poetry in the entirety of the universe? Mercifully, they are eventually shot into the vacuum of space and left for dead. However, once again at the last possible second, a traveling spaceship rescues them. Seem unlikely? Well it is, but to be fair the situation was aided by the infinite improbability drive (also endowed with the ability to morph two active missiles into a bowl of petunias and a plummeting whale, who then ponders his existence until he hits the ground with fatal results).
The ship they are rescued by is the Heart of Gold, the recently hijacked presidential craft. The hijacker? The president himself, of course, Zaphod Beeblebrox. Zaphod is dimwitted (despite his multiple heads), egotistical and worst of all, is dating Trillian?the woman Arthur unsuccessfully tried to woo at an Earth party some years before. Aided by some familial ties between Ford and Zaphod, the foursome becomes friends. The group is completed by the perpetually melancholy, eternally morose robot Marvin, who unfortunately is programmed with a GPP: genuine people personality.
Together they brave space and all its dangers on a seemingly impossible mission: find Magrathea. Magrathea?the home of Deep Thought, the universe?s most advanced computer, and the only one who knows the answer to the ultimate question of life.
Happy reading, and don?t forget your towel?
