My American Journey
(Colin Powell; Joseph E Persico)
My American JourneyByColin Powell and Joseph E. Persico This autobiography of Colin Powell is truly an amazing journey for anyone wishing to know something about American Brass, world leaders, and gentle giants who do more for world peace than most anyone. When you begin turning the pages you?ll find yourself back in the age of discrimination. How can a family rent or own when the color of their skin is black in a biased community? What if your parents search every corner of the community you are tied to and still find it difficult to live somewhere besides the street? General Colin Powell?s parents did just that. They scrimped and saved to move their family into a safe warm place, and yet the only home they found was one they had to share. Powell tells of a boyhood filled with common mischief, and yet in some miraculous way he found himself rescued from what would have been a tragic story of an average black man after two tours of duty in Vietnam. In his view societies rejects especially ones sentenced to serve their country or else is not an appropriate place for them. Why? ?They don?t want to fight.? And worst of all they generally don?t! Powell found himself on the trail to becoming a general and following the requirements the United States set fourth to become so, and then an amazing opportunity came along. He would work in the white house. He would lend an ear to dignitaries, white house officials. The respect he has received from his posts is stunning. After reading the book from cover to cover and closing this impressive work I walked away feeling dissatisfied. Why? My opinion was and still is that General Colin Powell could become the first black United States President if he wished. Why he defers that I suggest that you pick up the book and read it from cover to cover just the same as I did.
