Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a whimsical tale of a young boy, who holds too many responsibilities for a young child, and man, who holds on to his childhood wonder, like a balloon in the hand of a three year old. Every child should know the joy of this book. Roald Dahl has created unforgettable characters and a magnificent fairy tale mapped out within in the lines of his book. Lines that flow seamlessly from one page to the next.
He introduces young Charlie Bucket in the first chapter as a mousy child, who comes from very little money. Chocolate, something that most kids today enjoy daily, even hourly, Charlie is only able to enjoy maybe once a year on his birthday - if he is lucky. Roald Dahl instantly makes you feel close to Charlie. He pulls at your heart strings and moves you to cheer for Charlie throughout the book.
When it is announced that the famous, or to some infamous, Willy Wonka, will invite five children into his factory for a day, the reader can't help but hold on to the suspense and the hope that Charlie will be one of them.
When Willy Wonka is introduced to the readers he brings a presence and magic that no other children's book character has been able to bring to life. Wonka is an unforgettable touch of imagination.
And as the reader is led through Wonka's factory and every sight and every corner leads to a more spectacular surprise, you can't help but wonder and awe at the imagination and the genius that is Roald Dahl. This book teaches you to hold fast to your dreams and listen to your heart, no matter how young or old. This is a book for those that still hold that wide-eyed innocence, and maybe a book that will give it back to those of us who have lost it.
