The Diamond Necklace
(Guy de Maupassant)
Rightly celebrated as a moving author , French writer Guy De Maupassant weaves a ironic tale about a young couple whose entire life is turned upside down because of a diamond necklace which lends its name to the title .The story bears the signature of this classic story teller who manages to bring his characters to life with striking detail . The story starts with a description of the leading lady .Though living in very desolate conditions , Mathilde Loisel is a woman who craves for all the riches in life. Revelling in fantasies about riches ,she tries to forget that she is married to a petty clerk and a life of meagreness. Her husband is a man who lives by his means and is forever trying to please his wife. Though more practical, he is less ambitious than Mathilde . Mathilde's prayers for a chance of hobnobbing with the high crowd are answered in the form of an invitation to a dinner at a Minister's residence. Mathilde begins to prepare herself for the occasion and her much suffering husband obliges by sacrificing his savings . She spends extravagantly to look good for the Ball . All that remained was a necklace . Luckily , or unluckily , as we shall soon see , Mathilde is reminded of an old friend , Madame Forestier , who possesses a fine collection of ornaments . Out of these , she handpicks a fine , glittering diamond necklace . With the promise of returning it with proper haste , Mathilde waits for the day of the Ball to arrive. And arrive it does , in all its glory and splendour. The Ball is everything that Mathilde had expected , and more . Everything works in Mathilde's favour . Touted as the most beautiful woman in the crowd, she enjoys the attention being showered on her . After a night of waltzing , the couple leave , only to realise that the magnificent necklace is lost ! Alarmed , they retrace their steps , scanning the pavement but of no avail . They slowly come to terms with the fact that the necklace is dead . Shocked at the suddenness, the unfortunate couple borrow money to buy an exact replica of the necklace and return it to Mathilde's friend . And thus , their dreams are shattered as they realise that the debt is enormous. To bear the aftermath ,the pair live in a life of poverty , living in the strictest of conditions . Living under a roof with no servants , they try to make both ends meet as they continue paying off the ruinous loans that they had borrowed . But Time passed on ... Ten years later , all debts had been paid . Every single loan was settled .But Beauty had left Mathilde . She had become the typical working woman - strong and rough . She was no longer the delicate lady who had a certain charm . Thus , Time had robbed her of all that she ever had , her gentleness . Her delicacy .She spent her days thinking about that Ball , that fateful night , comtemplating how Life would be , if she hadn't lost that necklace . On one such day, taking a stroll in the park , she sees Madame Forestier , still looking youthful and striking . Mustering courage , Mathilde walks upto her and tells her what happened on that night , ten years ago. And nothing could hav prepared Mathilde for what she got in reply . Madame Forestier exclaims that that necklace was of imitation jewellery and was worth almost nothing ....
