(George Eliot)

Publicidade
Silas marner is a story of love and happiness. How do you define love or happiness? Silas Marner is loner and a simple man, for him just being left alone is happiness enough. A simple man with simple tastes and interests doesn?t want or need much to be happy.
Exiled by superstition and betrayal from Lantern Yard, and cut off from faith and human love, for fifteen long years the solitary simple-hearted weaver Silas Marner has plied his loom in Raveloe and devoted himself to the amassing of a hoard of golden guineas. He was falsely judged of theft 15 years before and left his community..He was trying to escape it all at Stonepits. Silas's chance of redemption, is a helpless baby. So beautiful is she to Silas that he falls in love with her immediately and refuses to ever part from her.. Squire Cass' younger son Dunstan steals Marner's gold and disappears the same night. Marner takes care of an orphaned little girl , Eppie and she becomes for him more precious than the lost property. Silas thinks that his gold has returned to him in the form of the child. His chance of redemption, when it appears one New Year's Eve, is intimately connected with the fate of Godfrey Cass, son of the village Squire. Clandestinely married, then blackmailed by his dissolute brother Dunstan, Godfrey like Silas has been trapped by his past, from which he is seeking to escape. Sixteen years later the skeleton of Dunstan and Marner's gold is found. Godfrey Cass, Dunstal's brother, admits that he is the father of Eppie. He married the girl's mother, opium-ridden Molly Farren secretly before hear death., for which secret he was blackmailed by his brother .Godfrey marries Nancy but are childless. Knowing the truth that Godfrey is Eppie?s father , they wish to adopt her but Eppie and Silas Marner don't wish to separate when Godfrey tries to adopt the girl.
The story tell about the ties of the heart and the strength of pure love between a father and a daughter though there are no ties of blood . in this story the adage- blood is thicker than water does not hold true here. The line"O father," said Eppie, "what a pretty home ours is! I think nobody could be happier than we are." Says it all I think about love, contentment, simplicity and happiness.
The story is humorous, richly symbolic, subtly characterized meticulously plotted and is heartwarmingly simple.
