The Gift Of The Magi
(O. Henry, William Sydney Porter)

With the winters around the corner and the fireplace seems to be the most inviting and comfortable place to cuddle up with a good book under a warm blanket.A hot cup of cocoa would be nothing short of pure bliss in this setting This was exactly the atmosphere in which i picked up this book to read, and by the time i was through with it,the story and its characters had penetrated deep into my heart.
The story primarily revolves around a couple and the extent they would go to please the other.Mr James Dillingham Young or jim as he is fondly called by his wife della are that very couple.Though not in the best of financial positions their love for one another transcends all limits. With christmas around the corner and each wanting to gift the other a beautiful gift they decide to sacrifice the two sole treasures that they respectively posess.
A dollar and 87 cents is all that della had saved by continuously haggling and bargaining with the grocers within the limits of selfrespect. But when she sits down to analyse the cost for a gift the amount in question falls way short. Now here it must be mentioned that the great treasure she owned was her cascading hair which could have put any woman into a state of violent envy. But so great was her love for jim that she sells off her hair and in exchange the money that she gets is used to buy a platinum fob chain for jim's favourite watch.
Ah yes !it was this watch that was jim's sole treasure. But with a meagre salary it was hardly possible for jim to buy della something nice for christmas let alone the set of studded combs she had her eyes on.So what he does is that he goes and pawns his watch and with the money he gets he purchases the desired set of combs.
With the both of them happy with their purchases, one sees the great selfless love that they have for one another and which transcends beyond material avarices.
But when the gifts are presented on the dday what they realise is that each had sacrificed what was most important to them.Looking from that respect a person may term the gifts as useless but looking beyond than just what meets the eye and grasping the true emotions and feelings behind the purchases these gifts are perhaps the most invaluable items that have ever been gifted. This book amply illustrates the power of love which transcends every possible barrier and these two youngsters moved by that very force embody the true spirit of christmas-love,selflessness and above all togetherness!
