Pygmy Forest

Isabel Allende finishes the tale of the young Alexander and his friend Nadia in Pygmy Forest. This time, they are deep in Africa's forests along with Alex's grandmother and journalist Kate Cold. What should have been a normal tourist trip on elephant's back leads Alexander and Nadia out into the African swamp, where they together with Kate and the grandmother must help Friar Fernando find a team of lost missionaries. Along for the trip are photographer Joel Gonzalez and Angie, who is a large African woman with a love of cigars and aircraft of suspect standard. Deep in the swamp they meet the pygmys and the story they tell is no less than terrible. The king og Ngoube is an inhuman and evil ruler, who has diven out and killed the reigning queen Nana-Asante. He holds the pygmy women as slaves, there children prisoners, to make the pygmys hunt elephants and bring him ivory for illegal export. The group insist that the pygmys lead them to the village where the lost missionaries are said to be. They are brought before king Kosongo, who speaks to them through "the royal mouth", as his voice is so powerful, noone else can stand to hear it. The group is taken prisoners, and held in the former mission, where there are no signs of the lost missionaries. Alexander and Nadia ust turn to their totem animal in order to help the pygmys gain enough courage to fight king Kosongo, his evil right hand man, commandant Mbembele and the mighty and terrible whichdoctor Sombe. The story plays up to an exciting end, with a wedding and Angie as the woman in the center of king Kosongo's feelings, an unfair duel between the powerful Mbembele and the little pygmy Beye-Dokou, as well as a row of mysterious and magical happenings that noone later can explain.
