Fears Flutterby is a deeply moving story of two women who become friends and during the span of their friendship completely reverse personality roles.
Whether you read for entertainment, information, human interest or inward growth, this book is for you. It covers a wide range of life experiences ? marriage, child rearing, golf, deep friendships, spiritual examination, Alzheimer?s and elder health care.
Joanna, at age 16, after a severe physical illness, developed psychological problems and became an introverted, frightened, self-conscious young woman. This continued into her marriage and raising of her two children. She developed agoraphobia and never left the house without her husband. After finding a therapist who taught desensitization and controlling thought patterns instead of sedation, Joanna began to gain control of her fears and gradually ventured out into the world.
She started playing golf and through the game met and became friends with Catherine, a self-confidant, personable, outgoing woman, an entirely opposite personality from Joanna. She came to admire Catherine, as a golf instructor, a mentor and eventually a dear and loving friend. After divorcing her alcoholic husband, Joanna and Catherine decided to move to Florida and share a carefree life, where they could play golf year round.
In less than ten years, Catherine developed Alzheimer?s. As they both coped with this devastating situation, Joanna learned, through necessity, to conquer her fears and became caregiver to Catherine, who had now developed fears and uncertainties of her own. For four years Joanna was the strong one who worked with the doctors in trying to cure Catherine?s Alzheimer?s. Unable to continue to care for Catherine in their home because of her own physical health, Joanna eventually placed Catherine in a nursing facility.
For the next ten years Joanna was health surrogate to Catherine, watching her decline and experiencing the nursing home horrors of all caregivers whose loved one is in such a facility. Through it all, Joanna learned that the only thing that truly conquers fear is love. Joanna?s love and concern for Catherine enabled her to control her fear and function as she needed, and Catherine, in the latter stages of Alzheimer?s, responded only to the quiet compassion of loving care.
The story of these courageous women gives insight into two very opposite personalities and shows the power of love in all areas of life.
