Ruth strikingly exemplifies the truth thatparticipation in the coming kingdom of God is decided ,not by blood and birth, but by the conformity of one's life to the will of God through - obedience that comes from faith. The central story is about Naomi's journey from emptiness to fulfillment, from destitution to hope and security , from despair to happiness through the selfless acts of Ruth and Boaz.
The family of Elimelech and Naomi moves to Moab to escape the famine,there Elimelech dies leaving Naomi and their two sons.they marry Moabite women. soon the sons also die. Naomi becomes "empty" having lost her men. She decides return home and advises her daughters-in-law to return to their parents house, to marry and start life afresh. Orpah returns home but Ruth insists on going with Naomi to Bethlehem ,to live with her taking her people and God as her own. That being the harvest season, she goes to glean grain behind the harvesters, incidently in the fields of Boaz-their kinsman-redeemer. he shows much kindness to her. He redeems her from another nearer kinsman and takes Ruth as his wife. With the birth of their son,Naomi through Ruth becomes "filled" where she was "empty" of sons/ family.
Contrast is used effectively, most striking is the contrast between the main characters Ruth and Boaz. one is young, alien,destitute
widow, another middle-aged,well-to-do Israelite. For each there is a corresponding character whose actions highlight by contrast, his or her selfless acts: Ruth - Orpah (Orpah's departure highlights the loyalty and selfless devotion of Ruth to her desolate mother-in-law), Boaz-
unnamed kinsman(this kinsmans refusal to assume the kinsman- redeemer's role highlights the kindness and generosity of Boaz towards the two widows).
It may seem surprising that one who reflects God's love so clearly is a Moabitess. yet her complete loyalty to the Israelite family into which she has been received by marriage and her total devotion to her desolate mother-in-law mark her as the true daughter of Israel and a worthy ancestress of David. Her place in the ancestry of David signifies that all nations will be represented in the kingdom of David's greater son. Redemption is the key concept of the account. our actions not bloodlines matter with God.
