Wuthering Heights is widely recognized as one of the great novels of English literature.It is not the usual fairy tale love story,on the contrary it is a violent tale of passionate love that turns into dark madness.It is dark,brooding and violent.The novel is told in the form of an extended flashback.In the winter months of 1801,a man called Lockwood rents a manor house called Thrushcross Grange in the country side of England.Here he meets the rude landlord,Heathcliff who lives in the ancient manor of Wuthering Heights.In this wild,stormy countryside,Lockwood asks his housekeeper,Nelly Dean,to tell him the story of Heathcliff and the strange inhabitants ofWuthering Heights.Nelly consents and Lockwood writes down his recollection of her tale in his diary.Nelly,as a young girl worked as a servant at Wuthering Heights for the owner Mr. Earnshaw and his family.One day Mr. Earnshaw returns from a trip to Liverpool,and brings an orphan gypsy boy named Heathcliff.In the begining the Earnshaw Children-a boy named Hindley and his sister Catherine detest the young boy.But soon Catherine comes to like the boy,and they both grow into strong friends.After his wife?s death Mr. Earnshaw becomes very sick.He develops a strong fondness for Heathcliff.But his elder son Hindley still hates Heathcliff and one day when Mr. Earnshaw finds Hindley beating Heathcliff he gets angry and send Hindley to college.Meanwhile Heathcliff and Catherine become inseperable.Three years later,Mr.Earnshaw dies,and Hindly inherits Wuthering Heights.He returns with a wife.He immediately seeks revenge from Heathcliff.After being pampered and favoured by Mr. Earnshaw,Heathcliff now is treated as a common labourer,forced to work in the fields.Heathcliff and Catherine continue to be close friends.One night as they wander to Thrushcross Grange to tease the children of the Linton family Edgar and Isabelle Linton.Catherine is bit by a dog and is forced to stay there for five weeks to recover.Mrs Linton,the mistress of the house tries to make Catherine a decent young lady.During her stay Catherine becomes infatuated with Edgar Linton.Meanwhile Hindley?s wife dies after giving birth to a baby boy named Hareton.Hindley gets engulfed in alcohol and his behavior towards Heathcliff becomes more cruel and harsh.One day Heathcliff overhears Catherine talk about the poor state of Heathcliff and how marrying him would degrade her in the society.On hearing this Heathcliff runs away and Catherine gets married to Edgar Linton,but in her heart she cares more for Heathcliff. Heathcliff returns after three years with huge wealth and seeks revenge from Hindley and on all who have wronged him.He gambles with Hindley and makes him fall in debts.He deceives Hindley and makes him put Wuthering Heights on line.When Hindley dies he inherits the Thrushcross Grange.He marries Isabelle Linton,the sister of Edgar Linton,whom he treats very badly.Catherine becomes sick and dies after giving birth to young girl called Catherine named after herself.Heathcliff begs her spirit to haunt him.to trouble him but not to leave him.Isabelle runs away to London and gives birth to Heathcliff?s son Linton named after her family.The young Catherine,the daughter of the elder Catherine grows into a beautiful young girl.She grows up at the grange with no knowledge of Wuthering Heights.But one day while on a walk on the moor she sees the ancient manson and meets Hareton,Hindley?s son.Meanwhile,Isabelle dies and her son Linton comes to live with Heathcliff.Some years later Catherine meets Heathcliff and makes a visit to Wuthering Heights.She meets the weak Linton and falls in love with him.They start a secret romance through letters.Nelly gets to know about this and destroys the letters and puts a stop to this practice.Catherine begins to secretly meet Linton at night. Linton asks Catherine to come and nurse him as he was very weak.Catherine believes Linton,who was acting on the orders of his father Heathcliff,who hopees for a marriage between Catherine and Linton to gain complete control over the Thrushcross Grange.Through Linton he makes Catherine and Nelly come to the Wuthering Heights and traps them there till Catherine marries Linton.After hearing the news of the marriage of Catherine and Linton,Edgar Linton dies.Heathcliff now gains control over Thrushcross Grange.He forces Catherine to live at Wuthering Heights and act as a common servant.Linton dies because of his father?s shabby treatment.Here Ellen?s story ends and Lockwood returns to London.He visits Ellen agin end enquires about the Wuthering Heights.Ellen tells him that,Catherine in spite of her initial desentment towards Hareton grows to love him.Heathcliff on the other hand becomes obsessed with the memory of the elder Catherine.He begins to speak to her ghost.He is driven mad by her ghost,and one day while on the moors he dies.Hareton inherits Wuthering Heights and the Thrushcross Grange.Hareton and Catherine plan to get married the next year
