Genesis

The book of Genesis is an extraordinary piece of literary genius. Few books, outside of Holy Scripture, are able to weave the tapestry of complexity found in the pages of this great work. There are numerous themes interwoven into a progressive story of a family chosen by God to live eternally of the pages of this book. They are forever an example for the generations of man. Three of the most obvious themes are the history of a family, God's relationship to His creation, and the human nature of man.
The theme noted upon initial reading is the history of a family. This book begins with creation of all things, including man. This is just a small portion of the work. The story of creation is limited to the first few chapters. From that point the history of a man and his decendants is recorded. Beginnig with Adam and following through the genealogy of the family known as the Isrealites.
The second most obvious theme is God's relationship with His creation. His great love is seen in His communion with Adam as they walked daily in the Garden. After the fall of Adam and Eve, from their perfect innocence and glory, God is seen persistantly seeking individuals obedient enough to hear His voice. Through this handful of men He guides His creation. He blesses and curses. He instructs and chastens.
The third common theme noted is the struggle of man with his own human nature. From Adam and Eve in the garden to Joseph's service as a slave in Egypt the battle is constant. Eve, wrestling with her own desires, disobeys the only rule of the garden. Adam, dealing with his own issues, stands by her side and follows her lead. From this point the human struggle snowballs. Every man finds himself battling his own carnality as he chooses his own actions. The conflict lies in following God's instruction, his own will, or his carnal lusts; sexual immorality, greed and pride. Man is recorded as making more erroneou choices than right choices, thus bringing God's chastening onto himself and his family. Many of the choices to serve self over God resulted in extreme consequences for the generations of the chosen family of God. The most extreme cases listed in this book are the expulsion from the garden, the flood, and the captivity in Egypt.
The book of Genesis is excellent reading for people of all religious backgrounds or beliefs. The relationship between the Creator and His creation, the history of the Isrealite people, and the human struggle are all wonderful teaching tools. The example set forth in these ancient words provide great wisdom for the daily life of man.
