A Relíquia
(Eça de Queirós)
?The Relic? starts with a presentation in which The narrator, Teororico Raposo, the main character of the book, tries to explain the reader what has led him to write his memories. First, he states that the main reason is the fact that, both he and Crispim, his brother-in-law, believe that they contain ?a discerning and powerful lesson? that deserves be immortalized as literature. The narrative is focused on a trip made by Teodorico to Egypt and Palestine, soon after a love affair that turns wrong, and it brings significant change to his estate and morals. Without intending to write a ?traveller's guide?, he describes ?with sobriety and sincerity? the circumstances in which those changes happen. However, his memories have another aim: making a correction of the book that his learned friend Topsius, his companion on that trip, writes on Jerusalem. In that work, ?Jerusalem seen and commented?, Topsius states that Teodorico carried in two bundles of paper that kept him company along the trip the ?remains of his ancestors?. Worried about what the Liberal Bourgeoisie might think of him, since only through one may get ?the good things in life?, Teodorico not only wishes to correct his friend?s work but also clarify his fellow citizens of the contents of those two packages. Although the narrative is mainly about the trip to the Holy Land, Teodorico tells us his whole life in his memories, since his parents first met until he decides to transform his life experience into literature.
