The portrayal of the conflicted hitman has been mined more than a few times. Because of the cliches created through the ample exposure of this theme in movies, books, television shows, the idea seemed to have lost some steam, that is, until I read Rain Fall by Barry Eisler.
With Eisler''s thrilling debut novel, we meet John Rain, one of the most hardened and interesting characters to hit the pages in a long, long time. Half American and half Japanese, Rain moves in and out of the shadows of both worlds with ease. His specialty is creating a situation where his victims appear to die of natural causes. Combined with his CIA training and expertise in the deadly art of judo, John Rain is one lethal customer.
Written in first person (and I usually don''t like first person), Eisler fearlessly brings the reader into Rain''s violent and cut throat world. It is most admirable of him not to soften Rain to make him a good guy hero. He is not a good man, but not necessarily bad. It becomes a matter of perspective. This is why it becomes a mega-dilema when he falls for the daughter of his latest victim.
For action fans, it''s also a treat to get some fun facts about surveilance, hi-tech gizmos, and martial arts sprinkled throughout. And let me just say that the brilliant description of judo matches here are breathtaking in their execution and brutality. Very easy to imagine the movements and skill involved. Not surprisingly it is revealed in Eisler''s bio that he''s a black belt.
The next installments to the Rain series are: Hard Rain and Rain Storm. A couple years ago it was rumored that a theatrical version of Rain Fall starring Jet Li might be in the works. Be sure to keep your ears open for that.
