All''s Well That Ends Well
(William Shakespeare)

Is Helen a dutiful wife or a determined gold digger?

This is a theme that should be explored if we are to give any rationale to her character.

Five seconds after her ?secret? love for Bertram, (the new Count of Rossillon) has been ?exposed? to his mother, Helen runs off to court (Bertram?s own destination) to help save the Kings life. Surprise: the King is now on the point of death. Another surprise: Helen has only just remembered that her father?s medicines could save him. In fact it would seem she has only remembered her deceased father because of his fabulous medicines now handy for saving the King?s life and wangling a reward ie Bertram.

Helen?s new self esteem takes a knock however when Bertram refuses. Forced by the King into the marriage Bertram runs off too woo another, Diana. Helen conveniently happens upon this very same lady and from there on, bribery, trickery, impersonation - nothing is off-limits.

Using Diana to fool Bertram into believing that he is spending the night with her, Helen gets her marriage consummated successfully and gets hold of the family heirloom, a priceless ring. She also sends word to say that she has died - no worries about a possible relapse on the Kings part, then.
Nor are there any illusions about the power and allure of ready money; Helen puts this commodity to good use when she drags Diana and her mother over hill and dale. Ultimately she does get her man, in the shape of the hapless Bertram, and furthermore secures her social position with a pregnancy.

As a heroine, Helen may leave us cold and unsympathetic, but as a single minded strategic commander ? wow!
