The Stranger
(Albert Camus)

Publicidade
"Maman died today."  It opens, expressing the relationship with his mother a special kind of remorse and attachment than could be expressed.  Later, we find he chose to put her into a nursing home as she aged, which he explains to others he wanted her to have more friends her age and that she was happiest in a home.  This novel asks the question, is the protagonist a cold-hearted monster or are the people who deal with him one for not accepting him for his "strangness" and ultimately killing him?  The question of this novel is who is the stranger?  The answers are not spoon fed to us, in fact this novel leaves many questions unanswered.  Within the first person''s perspective, we are lead into a series of events that seem more like a dream rather than reality.  He describes attending her funeral in cold-metal powerful sentences.  From the funeral he interacts with the funeral coordinator and this is where we get our first glimpse into how he interacts with others and how others react to him.  The funeral coordinator asks him if he would like to see his mother, who is lying in a closed-case casket.  The protagonist says no. The man in charge of funeral seems shocked and asks him why not?  "I don''t know," the protagonist replies.  During the funeral procession he thinks about his discomfort due to the sun''s heat.  We don''t know whether we can relate to him or if he is just too much.  However, as the novel goes on we don''t know what to think with repeated actions that are cool but not dispassionate.  He has a friend who beats his wife for what he believes might be an infidelity and the protagonist say that he can understand why he would do such a thing which comforts his friend.  The novel is very matter of fact.  He finds a girl he seems to love but when she asks him if he loves her, he says he doesn''t think so.  The way he acts is opposite from how someone is expected to act, is that enough to hang a man?  Should he deserve any mercy? With his comments topled with a defense killing it get''s him sentenced to be put to death.  This novel shows the psychological nature of coldness and how it hides in many facets of society.  This novel was very interesting, and not too difficult to read.  When I finished reading this book I was sad, horrified, and it made me think.
