The I Ching Workbook
(R.L. Wing)

Publicidade
This book is an ideal introduction for the beginner, yet it holds great value for even the most advanced student of this ancient Chinese oracle and book of wisdom and its use. The Introduction gives a short history of the I CHING -- its development, its use down through the ages, its proponents, its theoretical basis and its present day status. It explains the theoretical philosophical basis and its origins and application in the development of this system. It also explains how and why it works, in the next section particularly. This is followed by a section on how to use this book. The main part of the book consists of explanations of the meaning of each of the 64 HEXAGRAMS (6 line figures obtained , traditionally, by tossing 3 coins or counting out yarrow sticks). Each hexagram is covered in a one page description, starting with the general meaning, and then giving its application to affairs of business and politics, and to relationships with self and others. There is a note at the bottom of the page of the special meaning of the hexagram if there are no changing lines or (sometimes) if all the lines change. On the facing page, there is a section for each line (if it changes) as well as an area for recording these from readings, if desired. For the more advanced or curious student, there is a marginal gloss of the upper and lower, inner and outer trigrams (3 line figures, 2 of which, taken together, make up a hexagram), as well as the ruling (that is, the most influential) lines and their import (if one wishes to go into this more deeply, I would recommend the Bollingen edition of the I CHING for further study). In the Appendices at the end is a section on Chinese Pronunciation, various arrangements of the trigrams and their meanings as such, an explanation of King Wen''s arrangement of the hexagrams, a number of blank pages to use as a journal (if you wish) and, finally, a chart of the hexagrams by upper and lower trigrams, making them much easier to find after you have cast them.

There are many translations and interpretations of the I Ching -- all more or less valuable to the advanced student, and some to the beginner. This is the clearest, most relevant and most easily used and understood of all the versions I have seen to date. Even if one does not wish to use this as an oracle, the insights and understandings one can gain by reading this book are extraordinary, and its wisdom is profound.
