Campbells Kingdom
(Hammond Innes)
A fantastic read and such a pity I didnt find the title inspiring years ago and read it out of that old bookcase they got as a job lot down in Lewisham, instead of reading the romantic twaddle my mother suggested, probably from films she remembered after her days of being an usherette, like The Song Of Bernadette, Lady for Botany Bay or Wuthering Heights etc. Because Campbells Kingdom also made into a film I think is a cracker. Dispirited war hero who is dying of cancer, ten years after the war and in a hum drum job in London goes off to The Rockies in Canada to rejuvanate a ghost town by discovering oil in them there hills. You can feel the altitude and climbing up mountains as you read and feel the polluted air of smokey old London leaving him as the clean air brings him back to life aswell. Its so good I wish I could go off to Canada myself.
