Do Authors Have A Lot To Answer For?

Books - an escape from reality into the world of fiction. Or is it? Are people today taking the world of fiction and transposing it into their lives. In other words, living the fantasy.
With some Books being turned into movies, some of our young appear to want to make a statement by perpetrating horrendous copycat crimes upon society and leaving others to clean up their mess and deal with the grief that type of act brings.
Some really gripping stories involve intricate plots of countries spying on each other and the fallout associated with assignations and political implications. Are these stories based on fact or are they totally fiction? I suspect a mixture of both.
Are we guilty of accepting the type of writing that promotes violence as the norm? Should we be inviting authors to be more discerning and thoughtful and steer them to comedy, romance, adventure and the like without the brutality and mayhem some of the stories bring to humanity?
Who likes that type of prose? Is it the male or female population or a mixture of both? In my experience I find more men prefer the sadistic and active stories and more females prefer the romance, comedy and adventures. Men like the physical action whereby women like the softer, emotional story. Although that is a generalisation and we must remember there are always exceptions to the rule.
Life in all its glory is often a hard slog. Happiness and contentment are things we all long for but not everyone finds. We must remember that happiness is found within, not without. Outside influences can affect us but overall must not be allowed to cause us grief and only the people who matter to you should be able to affect your moods and attitudes. Escapism can either lighten our mood or depress us. Which would you choose?
I think as authors we have a lot to think about and answer for. After all, our story could have either a positive or detrimental affect on many lives. I prefer the positive and upbeat.
