Around the world in 80 days, by jules verne, one day at the reformers'' club in London, Phileas Fogg, a cold-blooded, methodical english man, takes up a wager to journey around the world in 80 days and, with clock like precision; to report at the club at the specified time accompanied by his french valet, passepartout, and by detective fix, assigned by the club to check up on the movements, Fogg start out on his impossible voyage. Adventure is piled on adventure. Being the cool and intrepid english man of popular legand ho over comes the most forbidding obstacels with endless resourcefulness. In China he saved Passepartout from a hostile mob. In India, despite his terrific hurry, he tkes time to rescue Aouda, a beautiful widow, from being byrned alive on the funeral pyre of his dead husband-and more time still to marry her. The book ends as phileas fogg walks into the reformers'' club, 10 minutes ahead of schedule, as the waiting members look at their watches. "Here i am, gentleman." he drawls.... the story has survived the development of transportation facilities much faster than those available to its hero.
