            CHAPTER ONE:
HTML, XHTML AND THE WORLD WIDE WEB

Although it began as a military experiment, it spent its adolescence as a andbox for academics and ecentrics, recent events have showed that the world wide WEB of computer networks, also knows as the World Wide Web, has grown into a widely diversified community of computer users and information vendors.  Today, one can bump into Internet users from corporate executive to the unemployed.

In many ways, the Web is worldwide.  People can contribute to the web''s work by creating HTML and XHTML documents and uploading oto servers that are designed to implement the code and make it easier for the lay person to see and as well understand what''s being said.

In a corporate office, Intranets and Extranets are the lifeblood of the web.  People who are employed at the corporation can publish documents for other employees to see.

In the beginning, HTMl began as a specification for all new documents to be published to the web,  The World Wide Web Consortium, or WWWC, an organization which regulates the validity of web documents and web sites.

As a website designer, there are certain tools that can be useful for him or her in order for succssful creation and implementation of a web site.  You need an editor, such as Notepad, which comes intstalled in Microsoft Windows, or BBEdit from Bare Bones Software Inc, for Macintosh OS X users.  Also, a broswser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Communicatir (Windows) or Safari (MAC) You also need a good and fast internet connection to post documents on a server.
