Amid The Roaring Waves
(Danielle Cruz)

Publicidade
It was a brisk afternoon when me and my family sat on the benches of a smallboat at Surigao City port, Philippines. We had just arrived from Cebu by ship and hoped to reach San Jose before dark. Each one of us were dead tired. Five passengers came along, too, and they looked as exhausted as we were. I watched my mom as she heavily sank herself on the seat while my father kept glancing the sun setting slowly behind the horizon. The boat was staying at the same position for an hour and I felt impatient about it.
This wonderful day turned into a nightmare when we have just begun the trip. I saw from afar the whitecaps at the sea. However, it never worried me for the sky was clear occassionally dotted with clouds touched by the sun with orange and yellow rays. Some passengers were sleeping while my brother busily throwing garbages in the water.I, too, was feeling my eyelids so heavy but I tried not to fall to sleep.

Then, without warning, the weather changed. Dark, angry clouds rolled in the sky. The wind rose to a gale. Torrential rain begun to fall in heavy drops and the waves grew big.Shortly, the monstrous waves begun tossing our boat up and down the turbulent sea. I threw each of my parents a worried look and it seemed, they were serious. I felt a knot in my tummy. I tried to relieve my nervousness by clasping my hands tightly.

However, my uneasiness persisted. Instead, it resulted to fear especially when I caught sight of the dark, moving waters. it was so horrible that it seemed to break our boat to pieces. The outriggers were striving to gain balance as it hit the water. The prow was likely to dive in the waves. Everybody was frantically holding their breath watching what would happen next. Even the noise of the engine was suppressed by the growing waves. It continued to smash the hull of the boat. I gripped at the bench to avoid myself in swinging left to right.

As I looked at the sea, it was worsening. Soon, we were shivering of cold. the water had entered the boat and the small roof was useless. I just wished that as soon as we dipped in the waves, we can still float. "This boat will eventually crush,"I mumbled desperately. Then my eyes became hot. Tears came rolling down my cheeks. My hope was washed away by the splashes of water in my face. I can''t imagine myself dying in the midst of the sea, gasping for air. My sobs grew louder.
I often asked myself if where we will land next when we''re tossed up again, in the boat or at the sea? I could hear the cries of the passengers calling for God. Only desperate voices dwelt on us. Swimming in such tumultous water was imposible for the waves will surely envelop you to the depths. The waves were relentless.

After several hours enduring on such perilous trip, the weather slowly calmed. Nearing to San Jose the sea was tranquil. I got up from the bench with tear-stained face mixed with salt particles. It was the most tiresome travel I''d ever had.

I was quite a girl of 13 then but I will never forget all my life the certain moment when I felt I was at the brink of the precipice of death and how I desired to live. Most of all, how God came to rescue us.#
