Sex Talks
(Smith, Libby)
This book by Smith Libby, is all about sexual awakening. The truth about sex, what is the purpose and the real meaning of it. Many of us, especially in the Filipino culture we are taught by our old folks that sex is a sacred thing. This can only be done by two married couples, and doing it outside the sacrament of marriage is a MORTAL SIN. Why is it that we need sex in our life? They say, that it is part of our common necessity or biological needs, but why is it that inside the households this topic is considered as DIRTY AND BAD? The road we travel during the sexual experience is filled with similar characteristics and different emotions. If we travel too fast and thinking only of one goal and destination, we may miss the beauty and wonder of the sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes encouraged along the way " SEX TALKS" is about this journey. It is more about the quality of our sexual experiences and less about the quantity. It is about partnering espoused in longevity, happiness, joy and satisfaction not only physically but also mentally, psychologically and spiritually. The problem that usually exists between the two individuals is lack of communication, Yes! this is true as I observed in our society. How in the world can so many people be sexually active without even talking about SEX? What is it that we are afraid to hear? What do we expect? What is the basis for our fears? Honestly, I beleive that we are afraid to talk about sex openly because it is a subject many feel unable to discuss. After all, how can we discuss a subject of which we know a liitle about it? I don't know if you still remember your sex education class from elementary school, but i certainly do. My teacher is referring the sexual organs of boys and girls in funny and two different terms. Birds, birdie , stick, for the boys "PENIS" and Flower, "MONAY" a kind of bread referring to the VAGINA of the girls. According to her those were the signs of the organs. Funny isn't it? how can you compare your penis to a bird were in fact, it doesn't fly? how can you compare the vagina to a flower were the smell of it is very much different. This are the reality that needs so much attention in our society. Maybe we can avoid the early pregnancies, rapes and other crimes if we have the so-called early education about sex beginning inside our homes. If only the parents were the one to discuss it to their children in a positive way and teaching them about this thing maybe we can have a happy, contented sexual experience at the right time with the right partner. SEX is not a topic of GUILT and SHAME. The bottom line is, the educator, and parents are encouraged to be open to their students and children about this topic. Because it is not only the educational arena where sex education is lacking, It is lacking within the institution of our families as well. Make sex as a topic of education, and as part of growing up as we travel the journey called life.
