The Secret Garden
(Frances Hodgson Burnett)
Secret garden is a beautiful novel from one of the finest author''s of children''s fiction- Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is purely a story for the children and of the children, with all of the innocence, curiosities and tantrums of children thrown in. The story starts off in India with an angry, spoilt and a frail little girl named Mary. But soon she finds herself all alone when her mother and everyone around her died in a cholera outbreak. No, she doesn''t sob, get scared or breaks her heart. Fortunately she has a rich uncle in England and is soon packed off to live in his estate in Yorkshire.
There she meets or rather discovers her cousin Colin who is a hunchback, and thinks he is going to die. But the real hero if a place can be one is the garden Mary discovers with the help of a robin. An almost magical bond develops between her and the garden, and it also draws in Colin and Dikon. The latter is a testimony to the goodness, innocence and healing that a genuine villager offers.
At the end of the book one is both amused and pleased at the way a selfish orphan girl, a bad tempered hunchback boy and a simple Yorkshire boy come to love each other and bring back life to a forgotten garden.
