Raised Of The Soil
(José Saramago)

Publicidade
Published in 1980 Raised of the Soil, considered for the critical one of the basic romances of Jose Saramago, is consequence of the sociability of some months with the workers of the Cooperative Union of Good Production, when the writer moved for Lavre and Montemor-O-Novo. Travelling, throughout the workmanship, as narrative, the author folloies the life of pain and suffering of three generations: Domingos Mau-Tempo, its son João and the grandsons António and Gracinda, married with António Espada. They represent the people of the Alentejo. A people who fights against the forces oppressors (the large estate owners, the forces of the order and the Church). It is a stubborn fight and of many sacrifices, in an environment of agricultural misery. It is a photograph of the antifascist movement in the Alentejo.
