The Poe Shadow
(Matthew Pearl)
The Poe Shadow by Matthew Pearl is a sensational work of fiction. It combines historical fact with a compelling mystery to create a wonderful story that you get sucked into immediately. The sheer amount of research involved makes this book well worth the read. The story is written from the point of view of a young lawyer who is about to be engaged to a childhood friend. However, when he witnesses one of the saddest if not the most pathetic funeral he''s ever seen, he is prompted to start an investigation that disturbs his whole life, alienating himself from his friends and family. He sets off to France to find the man that Poe based the fantastical detective on in "The Murders of the Rue Morgue" and at times, the young man''s attempts seem hopeless. However, determined to bring dignity to Poe''s death, he perseveres even endangering his own life, being thrown in jail for a murder he didn''t commit, and being chased by two French rogues. This book has a mystery worthy of Poe''s literary detective Augustus Dupin himself and you will be left on edge the entire time. I highly recommend this to any hardcore Poe fans, but anyone will enjoy it who appreciates a good mystery.
