The Schopenhauer Cure
(Irvin D. Yalom)
Irvin Yalom is reorganizing our knowledge about the famous philosophers of all the times. First it was "Nitche''s crying" and now is "Schopenhauer cure"? I already lookout to Yalom''s next book, maybe it will be "Beethoven hears ". Schopenhauer''s perception, his life''s personal approach and his important and exceptional philosophical ideas are interwoven and being showed through a thrilling interaction of a therapy''s group, it also became alive through Schopenhauer''s "representative" ? Phillip ? a central character in the book. In this book we will be able to find several lives''s circuits that interwoven one other. The big circuit her is the life circuit of the dying psychologist (Julius) in the frame of his work as a group therapist. Another one is Phillip''s that regards as a problematic and difficult patient. One large circuit includes the members of the group, and a little circuit of each different individual and his personal life. All those circuits are framed in and faced with the philosophical doctrine of Schopenhauer. The only one communal thing between the members of the group is the fact that they are being human beings that bring to the group''s meetings their personal distress, and share it with the others. The group interaction in the intimate therapy room, which is conducting by the psychologist, favorably allows them to see themselves through the mirror of the other''s life. For Philip ,the dissenter reated, Schopenhauer''s doctrine became the "light of his life", a way of life. a way of cure and heals. He almost sees himself as the Schopenhauer of this present time. And if not so at least, he is his "mouth" and representative on earth?? While following the group interaction, the selective reader can meet and examine Schopenhauer''s doctrine and outlook. Even this book seems to be easy to read and shows its communicative by giving "spicy" stories; it is still not as innocent as is seemed. By "glancing" to the lives of the therapist and his cases, trough their real life''s stories one can see that the book openly examine some very important issues and questions. This book asks relevant question and it obviously deals with very important issues. It speaks about the force of group treatment and its importance. It tells about the reliable communication between sensitive humans. It indicates on the meeting point of Philosophy and psychology. It shows human being''s transformation and mental development. It reflects on people''s dialog about stress and embarrassment, and present the different ways of facing unresolved difficulty. Phillip is the one that brings Schopenhauer''s "annunciation" through his own mental transformation, through citations and quotations from Schopenhauer''s doctrine, or through his behavior and outlook. The question that stays in the air is if a real cure is. A wall stands between Philip and the group. One represents the distancing and alienation ? nonhuman. The others represent a sensitive group - alive, breathing, being experienced. Their confrontation is thrilling, and influences. While reading, the reader moves between human''s lives stories that could be recognized from his own life, and on the other hand he could meet concepts that seats on the border between Philosophy and psychology. The book gives by an easy and interesting way an opportunity to recognize Schopenhauer and some of his interesting articles and phrases, and at the same time to try to examine their significance. The book is easy to read. It opens a window to an ordinary and an extraordinary daily life. It makes it possible to glance at our little world, and see what is really occurring in our life and at the same time to touch also the sublime fieoul and his wisdom as well. The name of the book - "The Schopenhauer cure" ? left me wondering if it is the Schopenhauer''s " mesicine" or it is Schopenhauer''s recovery???
