Scarlet Letter Nathaniel Hawthorne always wanted to become a writer. But as the luck would not allow him, he had to get the job of a clerk at Custom House. He would often talk to his wife about the art of penmanship. He would one day become a great writer. But realities of life hardly gave him any time. One day, while exploring the store of the Custom House, he felt a small cloth knotted in a binding. Curious, he unfolded the packet. What he found was a long gown with the letter ?A? stitched to it in Scarlet color. As the luck would have it, Hawthorne was relived of his job. Sad, he came back home and talked to his wife about his prospective job. His wife went in and came out with a pack of dollars which she handed over to him. She said, " This is the money I have saved over the years out of domestic expenses you handed to me. Go to some place and write your book. You always wanted to write. This is enough for you and me to survive for six months". " Hawthrone was totally unprepared for such a surprise." Now he started to decipher the mystery of the gown before he left. He talked to few friends at Custom House. And Lo, he found his story ! The gown belonged to a woman who was accused of adultery who was condemned to wear a gown with a Scarlet Letter ( A) on her bosom. That is how ?The Scarlet Letter? was born. The book became a bestseller. Hawthorn was no longer poor now.
