Obi, a twenty six -year- old man returns in the country from London where he had gone to study for four years. He has completely been changed by the western culture just as the community prepares to make him their ambassador in the government. After getting a highly paying job the society expects a lot from him not knowing that his salary can barely support his extravagant nature. He gets into unmentionable debts which can only lead be cleared through corruption. At the same time he falls in love with Clara. Just as he prepares to propose to her he discovers that she belongs to the outcast clan. However, he does not give up because his parents are christians and thinks that they will support him in this since they have ''seen the light'' . His father strongly refuses and the mother even promises to commit suicide once they get married. Just as he goes to explain to her why they cannot marry, he discovers that she is pregnant and the only way out is abortion. After the abortion Clara leaves him and before he comes into terms with this his mother dies. He had been his mother''s favourite child and she was the pillar that held his life. He turns to corruption and just as he resolves to stop the practise he is set up, caught by the police and jailed. This causes a big stir in the country as he had been at the forefront in fighting corruption.
The novel is full of the rich Nigerian culture and Africanism. Its a must read for lovers of literature and is easily available worldwide.
