Life Of Pi
(Yann Martell)
Life of Pi is a fantastically clever book. Set initially in India and moving out towards the pacific, the narrative tells the story of young Piscine and the incredible Life that he leads. The main strength of this book lies in its ability to disarm your level of what reality can be and puts you into a world with an almost dreamlike quality at times especially during the second part of the novel. The description is of the highest standard. Whether describing aesthetic features, or describing abstract feelings and emotions. All ring through with an element of authorial truth that every writer craves for in their novels. The landscapes are constructed in an almost playful manner with a very serious, philosophical strand of thought running alongside it which leaks into the carefully constructed plot and gives it weight. Issues of religion, relationships, loneliness, nature and animals (including ourselves) and the identity of God are all addressed in this majestic book with an authority that hints at the level of intelligence and mastery of the craft of storytelling that Yann Martell possesses
