CHAPTER 1-THE
DEPARTURE OF BOROMIR                                                                                                                                                              Aragon was           tracing the path of the ring
bearer(Frodo) when his quick ears caught the sound
of orcs
in the woodlands below. He then heard 'The horn of Boromir'. He turned to the
aid of him only to find Sam Gamgee missing. After a while he found BOROMIR
a mile away from Parth Galen pierced with many black feathered-arrows. Many
orcs were slain beside him He told Aragon how he tried to take the ring from Frodo
forcefully and then pleaded Aragon to come to Minas Tirith. When Aragon asked
about the Hobbits it was too late and Boromir was dead. It
was then that Legolas and Gimli arrived at the grim scene and learned about
Boromir's death. Ill fate fell upon the company whether to go for Minas Tirith
or search for the Hobbits hoping against hope that the orcs had kept their
captive's alive. Legolas advised Aragon to first tend the fallen so that no
evil creature dishonors his bones. While searching the bodies of orcs, they
found that not all of them were from Mordor, some were from Isengard also. They
laid Boromir in the middle of the boat that was to bear him away into the great
Anduin. When the 3 companions returned to the place where everything went amiss
and found 2 packs missing, and one was certainly of Sam. They then came to a
conclusion that Sam had gone with Frodo and they will not abandon the captive
hobbits and follow the trail of orcs.

RIDERS OF ROHAN

With a clear description of the surrounding atmosphere the
chapter begins with the trio debating which way to go. They had followed the
orc trail into the valley but there it had vanished. So after a long debate they
went northwards. A strange statement by Aragon caught the notice, what they
thought to be mere boulders were actually orcs. After a discussion it was
decided that orcs were slain among their own company. After a while, the sharp
eyes of Legolas caught a glimpse of an eagle which Aragon?s eyes could not
distinguish but Aragon?s eye caught something more important on which Legolas
commented that they are many folks which are almost 12 leagues away. In the
meantime Gimli argues that if the prisoners escaped or were carried eastwards
they would never find them, but Aragon said that if he read the signs carefully
then they went for Isengard. After a time suddenly Aragon gave a cry that many
riders were hastening upon then. Legolas clarified that they were 105. After a
while the riders were clearly seen and their horses were of great stature as they
were. Aragon stood up and called in a loud voice, ?What news from north, Riders
of Rohan?. With spears aimed towards them a man of worth came towards them and
inquired of them about their objective. To their answer he replied that they
would have failed and would have become prey to the orcs.

Aragon made their introduction and told that they were
looking for Hobbits. Eomer said that days were ill in Rohan and the power of
the white wizard was becoming heavy. Eomer named Aragon as Wingfoot. Eomer
asked their help for the up surging war but Aragon refused to come as he could
not abandon his captive friends. Eomer ordered that spare horses were to be
given to the strangers. Aragon mounted Hasufel and Gimli and Legolas mounted
Arod. With the trio debating over the woods of Fangorn, Gimli caught the sight
of and old man leaning on a bent staff. Suddenly Legolas cried that their
horses were gone. Gimli said that it was Saruman?s evil plot but nothing could
be done. Legolas followed Argon and Gimli followed Legolas, the old man did not
appear again and their horses did not return.

 THE URUK HAI

Pippin was lying on an orc?s back and memorizing what had
happened. He recollected how both of them ran wildly and were surrounded by
orcs, and then Boromir came to their aid and was slain by orcs and he could not
remember anything further. Pippin was able to understand the conversation
between the orcs which depicted that they were of different tribes. There was quarrel
going on among the orcs over the hobbits. An orc named Ugluk came forward and
commanded the other orcs but one opposed who called himself the trusted servant
of the dark lord. His name was Grashnakh. Upon the quarrel Ugluk rose up and
swept off the heads of opposing orcs and Grashnakh disappeared. Pippin used the
quarrel to his advantage and drew off the knot and knotted it again into a loose
bracelet of two loops. When a horseman saw the orc fleet, Ugluk said the troop
to hasten. He poured down a burning liquid down Pippin?s and Merry?s throat.
Grashnakh returned from the eastward direction and was followed by two orcs. There
ws a soft quarrel between Ugluk and Grashnakh over Nazgul. Riders were upon the
orcs and Ugluk commanded the orcs to redouble their pace. The orcs halted in
dark. Some men had closed upon the orcs and the guards of Pippin and Merry had
gone but they felt the heavy hand of Grashnakh gripping them. Pippin tried to
lure Grashnakh but his attempt went in vain. As soon as riders closed in
Grashnakh ran away and Pippin and merry had a piece of Lembas. Meanwhile Merry
and Pippin fled into the shadows in the woods of Fangorn. Ugluk was slain by
Eomer, The third marshal of the Mark.
