Why So Many Poor In A World Of Riches?
(Watch Tower Publication. {Monthly Magazine, May 2007})
Suffering through poverty has always unabetedly defied the efforts of both philantropists, indusrtialised nations and others, inspite of all their efforts put toward abeting it. The polarisation it thereafter had caused is that many nations are enjoying prosperity, while hundreds of millions of people are still hopelessly wallowing in abject poverty. What are the causes? Is there hope for the poor? These and more are the disturbing questions in the mind of the writer of this. He though made a wonderful revelation, that total value of goods and services produced world over{gross products}in 2005 was estimated to exceed $60 trillion. This, he revealed, averaged $9000.00 for each person now alive. He further asserted that the present global properity is part of the great irony. This he however, defended well by saying that "According to recent United Nations publication, the wealth of the world`s three richest individuals is greater than the combined gross domestic products of the 48 poorest nations. And the UN Development programme states that 2.5 billion people are trying to survive on less than $2 a day. Hundreds of millions are under-nourished and cannot obtain clear water" What is the cause of this social problem which plagues humanity at its whims and caprices, the writer asked? For youths have as a result turned to Armed-robbers, prostitutions, and as well turned to hard drug pushers and adict to cushon the effects. He lucidly outlined the following points as the major causes of the poverty syndrome world over. i. failure of most government policy to salvage it ii. the rich getting richer syndrome iii. bad leadership in governance especially in the third world iv. bad decisions by some people concerning vital issues of life. Though it was argued that not all poor people are poor as a result of their bad judgment v. Historically, it was gathered by the writer that in 1930`s the world was gripped with financial catastrophe that came to be known as the Great Depression. In one country millions lost their jobs and hundreds of thousand of families lost their homes. vi. Much labour and an inadequate reward. As many poor struggling to survive from day to day. The writer went further to stress that the poor often have little opportunity to improve their lots in life. This type of life are very common in the developing countires that one is tired of reading them. Political manipulation by leaders, and when market forces push the cost of life`s necessities to levels that the poor cannot pay, we are seeing the result of a system unable to care for its most vulnerable subjects. The world economic structure neglects millions of impoverished humans. Having seenthat inspite of the fact that the good sections of world economy had recovered from the Great Depression, and now many people appear to be richer and more secure than ever, the poor still out numbers the well placed. For instance, according to the writer, "In the United States, sociologists are studying a group they term the `near poor`. The risk of such ones faling into poverty is great. Over 50 million people there find themselves in that condition despite the country`s great wealth. Today world over, a flood of money is pouring into treasuries and bank accounts but a flood of misery still covers hundred of million of poor people. So many have so little opportunity to benefit from the world`s growing wealth. In the so-called third world countries, where predominantly the 48 most poorest nations of the world exist, the most pathetic story is heard. With all these conditions biasing, the writer would want to know what do we do to save generality of mankind, and to get them rid-off poverty completely. Is there hope for them? And how soon shall the hope materialise?
