The Story Of A Free Prisoner
(Tasnuva islam)
The story of a family The atmosphere was very dense. The people were whispering and muttering loudly. I saw the prosecution and defence lawyers talking and discussing with their assistants. I knew what they were talking about: how to get the fifty thousand dollar as they were promised by my best friend to help me win the case. I gave a small sigh. He knew I would not like it, but still he will not listen. He doesn?t understand at all, I thought. ?Psst, Bro,? said a voice from my side. It was my elder brother. ?Don?t worry at all. We will win the case.? ?Maybe or maybe not,? was my reply. ?What do you-? but the rest of the sentence was cut off by the entrance of the judge. ?Good luck and don?t worry,? said my brother and went to his seat behind the row where the lawyers were sitting. ?Please start the arguments of this case,? ordered the judge. And so it began. The whole thing seemed really pointless to me. I saw the expressions on the faces of my family members. I saw the witness? come and go telling the man in the witness box had nothing to do with the murder. All of them were sold, no one will understand my grief, I thought as I stood there. They just don?t understand that I can get peace if I was punished. I wish she was here. Then suddenly this whole thing seemed to fade from my mind. My mind was only focusing on her. Her encouragement, understanding nature, support and love are the only things which matters to me. The whole court seemed fade from my mind? ?Hey,? said a soft voice. It was her. ?Missing me?? ?Yes,? I replied. ?This whole thing seems so pointless. What should I do? They just don?t understand.? ?They want you to win because they love you,? she said. ?They do not want to lose you.? ?But I want to lose the case, so that we can be together again.? ?I know,? she said. ?I never stopped you from doing whatever you want and I will not stop you now, because I know you will never do anything which is wrong.? She gave me thumbs up and said ?Good luck?? I suddenly came back to reality. Now, I know what I have to do. ?After hearing the arguments of both sides,? said the judge. ?I came the decision that-? ?Stop your honor!? I cried out. He turned towards me. ?The witnesses were lying. They did not tell you the truth. I really am the murderer. I am the culprit. I bribed the prosecution lawyer to tell a lie to save me.? My eyes took a glimpse of the horrid expression on the faces my family members. ?What are you doing?? my brother mouthed. I ignored him. ?Please your honor; give me the punishment I deserve. I surrender to the law.? The judge stared at me for a few minutes and then said ?As the culprit has confessed his crime, I hereby declare under the law three hundred and two, to hang the culprit till he dies on the twentieth of April which is a month from today, at dawn.? I was relieved. It seemed as if I finally got freedom? However this is not the full story. There are deeper, darker and more tragic secrets hiding beneath it. As I stood behind the bars, I thought about all the things that happened in my life till now. I wish all those moments could come back. But as the saying goes ?time and tide wait for none.? I want to tell my story to everyone but my lips are sealed. All I can do is to remember those moments. Remember the happy memories and regret the doleful moments?. (To be continued)
