Reaper Man
(Terry Pratchett)
Although Terry Pratchett''s Disc World novels are considered a series, there is no particular order that they need to be read, for each one stands on its own as a complete story. In Reaper Man, Death is... so to speak... sacked. The Auditors felt that Death had developed too much of a sense of morality and decided it was time for him to be replaced. He takes his horse, Binky, bids farewell to his trusted servant, Albert, and heads off to the land of the mortals. While the Auditors are deciding what to replace Death with, a strange thing begins to happen. Since there is no one to collect the souls, the people and other living things who die wind up getting an extension of life. This comes as a bit of a nuisance to the faculty at the Unseen University when Windle Poons, an old wizard who was very much looking forward to what was coming after life, returns to his body as a zombie. Throughout the city of Ankh-Morpork, a strange mass of energy, brought into existence due to the lack of death, begins to manifest itself - first as a bunch of snow globe eggs which hatch into shopping carts and finally mature into a demented version of a shopping mall. The wizards at the Unseen University realize that this is a form of attack on the city and are heroicly determined to stop it. Meanwhile, Death learns valuable lessons about life while working as a farm hand for an elderly woman, Miss Flitworth. His adventure is brought to a climax as he is forced to face off with a possessed harvester as well as the new Death. Reaper Man is a wonderful story, masterfully told by one of the world''s most prolific fantasy writers, It is full of moments that will make you laugh-out-loud as well as some very touching ones. It''s one of those books that you are likely not going to be able to put down when you start reading. Read it and reap!
